Welcome!
Welcome to The Church of St John the Evangelist and to its website.
St John’s Church is part of the United Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney in the Scottish Episcopal Church. The Scottish Episcopal Church is in Full Communion with the Church of England and belongs to the family of the World Wide Anglican Communion.
Opened in 1851, St John’s Church was the first post-Reformation church in Aberdeen to be built in the pre-reformation style. Its outstanding features included a wonderful east window, famous for its beautiful stained glass, and two spectacular gold crosses of Celtic design. Over the years other glories were added, notably a medieval baptismal font rescued from destruction, an altarpiece by Ninian Comper, Aberdeen’s most celebrated architect, and a unique mural painted in the French impressionist style, whose existence in an Aberdeen church continues to baffle art historians.
